How Chinese zodiac compatibility works

The Chinese zodiac assigns an animal to each lunar year in a twelve-year cycle. Compatibility traditionally comes from four relationships. Animals in the same trine (four years apart) share a mindset. Six Harmony pairs, sometimes called secret friends, complement each other. Clashes happen between opposite animals six years apart, and Harm pairs tend to rub each other the wrong way.

Each animal also carries a fixed element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. Elements that feed each other in the generating cycle add harmony, while controlling elements add friction.
