How zodiac compatibility works
Western astrology groups the twelve signs into four elements. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is energetic, Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is practical, Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is intellectual and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) is emotional. Signs of the same element, and the complementary pairings Fire–Air and Earth–Water, are traditionally considered the easiest matches.
Each sign also has a modality. Cardinal signs start things, Fixed signs sustain them and Mutable signs adapt. Finally, the distance between two signs on the wheel forms an aspect, such as the harmonious trine, the friendly sextile, the tense square or the magnetic opposition.
