Animal abilities get flattened into slogans. The eel that shocks, the bat that sees with sound, the shrimp that punches. Each of those slogans hides a mechanism that is more interesting than the headline, so here are six of them explained properly.
Bats: hearing shaped like sight
Echolocating bats emit calls, often above the range of human hearing, and build a picture of their surroundings from the returning echoes. The precision is remarkable: many species detect insects mid-flight and adjust their pursuit in fractions of a second. To avoid deafening themselves, muscles in the middle ear contract in time with each outgoing call.
Electric eels: living batteries
Electric eels are not true eels but knifefish. Specialised electrocytes stack like cells in a battery, and when they discharge together they can generate hundreds of volts. Lower-voltage pulses are used for navigation and sensing prey, while the high-voltage discharge is for hunting and defence. Some individuals leap partly out of the water to deliver a shock more directly to a threat.
Mantis shrimp: the cavitation punch
The mantis shrimp's raptorial club works like a spring-loaded catapult, storing energy in a saddle-shaped structure and releasing it explosively. The strike is fast enough to create low-pressure cavitation bubbles in the water, and their collapse adds a second shockwave. Aquarium keepers have reported cracked glass, and the club material is now studied for impact-resistant engineering.

- Arctic foxes change coat colour seasonally, and their compact extremities reduce heat loss dramatically.

Migration without maps
Arctic terns migrate between polar regions each year, covering tens of thousands of kilometres. Several species appear to use magnetic sensing alongside sun and star positions, and young birds often refine the route through experience. What looks like a single superpower is usually several ordinary senses combined and tuned.

None of these abilities are magic. Each is an ordinary physical or chemical process pushed to an extreme by long selective pressure, and each is limited by real trade-offs. The bat spends energy calling. The eel spends energy charging. The gecko's feet fail on dusty surfaces. Understanding the trade-off is what turns a fun fact into knowledge.
