Who Holds the Record for the Fastest Serve in Tennis?

Sports · 12 questions · Medium

The fastest serve in tennis is one of those records with an asterisk attached. The highest speed ever recorded belongs to Australia's Sam Groth, who was clocked at 263 kilometres per hour, or 163.4 miles per hour, at a Challenger event in Busan, South Korea in May 2012. Because it happened outside the main ATP Tour and the radar calibration was questioned, it is usually listed as the fastest recorded rather than the official record.

That distinction is the heart of this quiz. Serve speed is measured by radar guns whose placement, calibration and reporting standards vary between tournaments, which is why the number you see on a stadium screen is not always comparable with the one in the record books.

Twelve questions on the records, the players and the physics behind the biggest serves in the sport.
