A common year has 365 days: 52 full weeks plus one day. A leap year has 366 days: 52 full weeks plus two days. That is different from the ISO week-numbering calendar, where a week-year contains exactly 52 or 53 whole numbered weeks. In 2026 the ISO week-year has 53 weeks. The calculator below shows the week number, week-year and Monday–Sunday range for a chosen date.

What is an ISO week number?

Under ISO 8601 week conventions, a week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. Week 1 is the week containing January 4, equivalently the year’s first Thursday. That means an ISO week-year can start in late December of the previous calendar year or in early January. A date’s week-year and its ordinary calendar year are not always identical.

December 30, 20242025-W01-1Monday starts week 1 of 2025
December 31, 20262026-W53-4Thursday belongs to week 53

Which years have 53 ISO weeks?

An ISO week-year has 53 weeks when January 1 is a Thursday, or when a leap year begins on a Wednesday. Both conditions produce 53 Thursdays. Other ISO week-years have 52 weeks. This is not a claim that a civil year suddenly contains 371 days: week-years borrow boundary days from neighbouring calendar years.

Leap years do not create an extra full week

The Gregorian leap-year rule is: years divisible by four are leap years, except century years must also be divisible by 400. Thus 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not; 2100 will not be. Adding February 29 changes the remainder after 52 seven-day blocks from one day to two, not to a whole extra seven-day week. A leap year and a 53-week ISO year are related calendar concepts, not synonyms.

Using week numbers for work, school or a challenge

If a timetable says ‘week 1’, ask which system it uses. A course may number weeks from the first teaching day, a business may use a fiscal calendar and a phone calendar may start weeks on Sunday. None necessarily matches ISO. When sharing a deadline, include the full date or the ISO week-year as well as the week number. ‘Week 1 of 2025’ is clearer than ‘week 1’ and can include December 2024 dates.
