How long do dogs live? In a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs, median survival across all dogs was 12.5 years. The figure varied by breed, size, sex and skull shape. Median survival is the estimated age by which half a group has died; it is not a maximum lifespan, a promise or the same statistic as life expectancy at birth.

One dataset, one clearly named statistic

McMillan and colleagues combined records from UK veterinary providers, breed registries, welfare organisations and other sources. The dataset included 284,734 dogs that had died. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis also incorporates dogs still alive at the last observation rather than pretending every lifespan is finished. The paper considered 155 purebred groups and a crossbred group. Using one study avoids mixing incompatible estimates from different countries and years.

Selected breed median survival, ranked highest to lowest — UK 2024 study
Breed / groupMedian survival (years)
Lancashire Heeler15.4
Shiba Inu14.6
Papillon14.5
Border Terrier14.2
Schipperke14.2
Labrador Retriever13.1
Border Collie13.1
Crossbred12.0
Pug11.6
Bulldog9.8
French Bulldog9.8
Caucasian Shepherd Dog5.4

These are selected estimates from that study, not a complete ranking of every dog breed. Close estimates are not guaranteed meaningful differences. A rare breed’s estimate can be much less stable than a common breed’s. Dogs labelled ‘crossbred’ also vary greatly: that category is not one consistent body size, ancestry or health profile.

What size and face shape tell us — and what they do not

The study estimated median survival of 12.7 years for small breeds, 12.5 for medium breeds and 11.9 for large breeds. Flat-faced, or brachycephalic, breeds had a pooled median of 11.2 years. These group patterns can inform conversations about breeding and health, but pooling hides variation. It would be wrong to assign a particular life expectancy to a dog from a photo of its muzzle.

Purebred dogs had a pooled median of 12.7 years and crossbreds 12.0 years in this dataset. That finding does not prove that buying a purebred dog lengthens its life. Other research designs and populations can produce different results. The category includes both relatively long-lived breeds and breeds with lower survival; an observational association is not a simple causal recommendation.

Why two websites can give different breed lifespans

  • A median is the midpoint of a survival distribution; life expectancy at birth is an average expected remaining time estimated from mortality patterns.
  • A study based only on recorded deaths answers a different question from an analysis that also includes dogs still living.
  • Country, care, time period, breed classification and recruitment can change the sample.
  • Small samples and changing breed popularity can make estimates unstable. A precise-looking decimal is not a guarantee of certainty.

Planning for a dog’s whole life

Breed research is useful before adopting a dog because it encourages questions about inherited conditions, healthy structure and lifelong care. It is much less useful as a countdown after adoption. A Labrador that has already reached twelve is not obliged to die at 13.1. Ask a veterinarian about appropriate nutrition, body condition, exercise, dental health and signs of illness. This is general educational material, not a clinical prediction or replacement for veterinary assessment.
